During the holiday season many people have the desire to give to charity to help others. Such a happy time of year can be difficult for those who are dealing with personal illness or that of loved ones. Jacob’s Heart Children’s Cancer Association is committed to support families and improve the condition of life for children with cancer. One way to support this cause during the holiday season is through car donation.
Children under the age of 18 with cancer who live in San Benito, Monterey, Santa Cruz, and South Santa Clara Counties can receive support services through Jacob’s Heart. Families are referred to Jacob’s Heart from both California at San Francisco Children’s Medical Center and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford.
No family should have to deal with childhood cancer alone. Jacob’s Heart services are free of charge and are customized to meet each family’s unique situation. Some of the services that Jacob’s Heart offers:
Counseling and Family Support
Jacob’s Heart offers support from diagnosis, through treatment, and beyond. The goal is to help each family member and to meet their individual needs during each stage. There is also the opportunity to connect with other community services such as transportation services and in-home medical care.
Support groups and counseling is offered by Jacob’s Heart to families of children in treatment and for those who need support for grief. Family counseling, thematic support groups, and bereaved family groups are all available.
Peer to Peer Support
Jacob’s Heart connects families together who can relate to the challenges faced by those with cancer diagnosis and those who have experienced the loss of a child. Parents can often learn more from other parents who have gone through similar circumstances than from any other way. There is even a special support group for teens who are enduring cancer called the Teen Advisory Group.
Financial assistance is available from Jacob’s Heart to families encountering hardship because of a child’s illness. They will also help with emergency needs, transportation, groceries, and gas. The program also helps with long hospitals stays, medical prescriptions, and other financial assistance that helps relieve the stress that comes with pediatric cancer.
